MI-YUN PARK
Name: Mi-Yun Park
Nickname: Mi, Mimi, Yun, Grey Pawn, Pawn, Silent Pawn, etc
Nationality: Medius [Fem!South Korea]
Gender: Female
Age: 19
Social Rank: Noble
Occupation: ♟ Grey Pawn for the Kingdom of Medius
Hair Color: Very dark brown; verging on black. Her hair is thick and glossy, and seems to shine in the sunlight like dark ebony.
Eye Color: Brown; a shade of chestnut or, in certain lights, a darker tone that some would describe as coco brown. Her eyes are quite dull, and so appear much darker than they probably actually are.
Weight: 124 lbs, 56.2 kg
Height: 5 ft 3.4, 161.1cm
Special Features: Mi-Yun has incredibly long hair that falls past her waist when loose. Having hair this length is impractical, but she does not want to cut it, so most of the time it is left in a long braid that trails down her back, decorated with a large red ribbon to hold it in place. She also has a rather strange little curl that stick out at the side of her head. Usually she is able to tuck in back and keep it secured in her plait.
Likes:
- Food: One of her favourite pass-times is cooking, and if you like cooking you must like eating too! Mi-Yun eats a lot, never missing a meal and having frequent snacks between. It must be some kind of miracle that she doesn't put on weight. Her favourite food is Kimchi, a dish that she learnt from her family and the first meal she learnt to make herself. Some would say she's addicted to it, as she'd much rather have a plate of Kimchi than anything else.
- Reading: It's very likely that Mi-Yun might slip away from training or her position to go find a secluded place to read a book. Her nose always seems to be stuck in them, and she has a love for fantasy stories or tales of the past. Reading indulges her active imagination, feeding it with vivid images that will always bring a smile to her face.
- Dance: She has a talent for dancing, and it is one of her main skills. Mi-Yun may not be able to sing, but as soon as music starts playing it carries her body away and she can't help but move to the beat.
- Romantic Dramas: Dramatic tales of love and heart-break always cause Mi-Yun to well up. She adores these stories, and secretly longs for a passionate romance like the ones she reads about or sees in romantic dramas.
- Drawing: She has proven to have quite a talent for sketching, and might start randomly doodling in her notebook when she's bored. Her talents are impressive, and she sometimes might try to teach other people how to draw like she does. That's easier said than done, though.
- Order: Mi-Yun is a little obsessive when it comes to keeping things clean, in order and organised. Everything must be kept as clean and tidy as possible and she goes to great lengths to keep it that way. Her room is always pristine, with everything neatly stacked away where it belongs. Mi-Yun also likes it when people are in order; when she and the other Pawns are lined up to attention and follow exactly what has been told.
- Shopping: Mainly for clothes and food. It's just something she finds enjoyable, to go out and search for the right thing. When she finds whatever she was looking for, Mi-Yun feels incredibly happy and proud of herself for her little accomplishment of the day.
- Horror Stories: She finds it fun to get scared. One of her favourite things to do is to sit around a fire with some of the other Pawns and listen to the scary stories they tell to try and frighten each other. Mi-Yun tends not to get scared as easily as certain other Pawns, but she does enjoy the rush of adrenalin when each tale reached its climax.
- Puzzles: They're a great way to stimulate the mind. Plus, they can be a lot of fun, if you don't get too frustrated with them.
- Learning: She has always been a curious person, and has a thirst for knowledge. Mi-Yun wants to know about things, places and people. She loves learning and finding out something new.
Dislikes:
- Silence: Even if she can't participate in a conversation herself, Mi-Yun likes to be surrounded by chatter. However, as soon as everything goes quiet, she starts to feel uncomfortable and sometimes (if the silence is prolonged) will grow desperate to cause any kind of noise just to break up whatever quiet tension is looming over them.
- Mess: Mi-Yun may like cleaning, but that's only because she's getting rid of the mess. If anyone causes any mess or disorganisation, she'll hit the roof. Then, at least she'll enjoying the cleaning after.
- Insects: Horrible little pests that seem to multiply and get everywhere. Even when you try stamping them out, they never die! Some of them are disgusting and creepy, and she can't stand them at all.
- Sports: Although she is fit, Mi-Yun does not enjoy participating in sports. She finds them too rough and tumble for her liking, and would much rather sit on the sidelines watching than getting injured in some rough game.
- Reckless Behaviour: Immaturity just annoys her, especially when people don't think things through and put themselves in harms way. Seeing it actually makes her a little angry.
- Being Different: It would be so much easier if she could just fit in better, but that's virtually impossible for Mi-Yun in the state she's in.
- Mud: It’s messy and dirty and gets everywhere! Plus, it leaves horrible stains on your clothes which are a nightmare to get out. It really annoys Mi-Yun that Medius is such a wet country with so much mud.
- Heights: Although she hasn't a fear of heights, Mi-Yun always gets dizzy when she's up high. That just makes her feel sick, which nobody likes at all.
- The Dark: It’s such a cold and empty thing... and so quiet. It just feels too lonely for Mi-Yun, and she doesn’t like being in the dark unless she’s about to go to sleep or is in the company of others. She’s not scared of it, but it doesn’t exactly make her feel very comfortable either.
- Pens Running Out of Ink: For most, this is only a minor annoyance. For Mi-Yun, on the other hand, this is a serious problem. Writing is her main form of communication, and if her pen runs out then she's stuck and unable to get what she wants to say across.
Strengths:
- Martial Arts: She is a talented fighter, taking her skills from some of the fighting techniques from the old days. Her agility, coordination and speed are impressive.
- Calm: Mi-Yun remains level headed and will always try to solve a problem by thinking things through carefully.
- Excellent Listener: Mi-Yun is always open to listening to people's problems, and will happily pay attention to what people have to tell her. If they need to get rid of some of their burdens, they can always turn to her for she will happily listen.
- Mature: She shows a high level of maturity in how she acts, and remains focused
most of the time, instead of getting distracted by childish behaviour. - Writing: Her skills at portraying her feelings through writing is amazing. People can read something she has jotted down and know what she means, thinks or how she feels.
Weaknesses:
- Impatient: If things aren't going quickly, Mi-Yun tends to get quite grumpy. She is certainly impatient, and can be made quite irritable if things don't move along swiftly.
- Communication Skills: The fact of the matter is, no matter how much she writes, sometimes it's just impossible for Mi-Yun to properly communicate what she is thinking. There are times when you need a voice to express yourself, and a pen and paper just cannot do that for you.
- Jealousy: Because she is so different, Mi-Yun tends to be jealous of almost everyone because they're normal. This can taint her views on people, so she doesn't try to get to know people properly.
- Sugar: An excess of sugar is never a good thing for her. She tends to get sugar-rushes, and will go extremely hyperactive if given too much energy.
- Politics: Yeah... she really doesn't understand politics. In fact, she's completely inept with laws and the way the Kingdoms are run. Mi-Yun just tends to follow along and do what she's told so she doesn't confuse herself by trying to work out how the systems work.
Dreams:
- Speech: Mi-Yun is hoping more than anything that one day, the doctors of Medius will be able to find some miracle cure to her disability so that she'll be able to talk, laugh and shout to her hearts content like any normal person is able to.
- Try Every Food: A strange little goal to set, but she's aiming for it none the less. Mi-Yun has made herself a promise that she will try everything you can imagine to eat before she dies.
Fears:
- Disability: It's bad enough not to be able to speak, but the idea of loosing her sight, hearing or being severely injured is a nightmare for Mi-Yun. She wants to remain as healthy and fit as she possibly can so that her life isn't altered even more and made harder.
- Never Talking: This is ten times worse than the previous fear. Never being able to say a word before she dies is something Mi-Yun finds sickening, horrible. She doesn't want to be an outcast forever; it would be best just to be normal.
Personality: Mi-Yun Park is quite a strange character to most people. For those who do not know her, she is mysterious, giving off an almost hostile atmosphere and a feeling of ambiguity to strangers with her silent exterior. The woman is calm rational, always taking time to asses a problem or situation before jumping to conclusions and rushing into things. Her level-headedness, along with her lack of speaking, gives off a slightly creepy vibe about her to some. Add that to the poker-face she wears when concentrating (which is most of the time), and Mi-Yun is definitely mysterious. Some would say she is closed off; unfriendly towards anyone who judges her or jumps to conclusions about her because she is different. She portrays an air of confidence to those around her however, despite the fact that really, she’d much rather be away from the crowds and in a quiet place, reading or just day dreaming. Although not one to enjoy solitude, Mi-Yun would rather sit back and just listen to other people’s conversations instead of participating. She prefers the atmosphere of company than participating in it.
The young woman is constantly radiating maturity, and clearly frowns upon anyone who lacks that quality or misbehaves. It is a well know fact that Mi-Yun is judgemental of those who do not take things seriously, and can become rather irritated and annoyed when somebody is messing around instead of working hard. Impatient with those who are getting on her nerves, Mi-Yun has proven countless times to be intolerant. It is also obvious that she follows a strong belief of honour, and is incredibly hard working, which is why recklessness gets on her nerves so much. Focused, most certainly. When she sets herself a goal, Mi-Yun will strive for it and refuse to let it go until she obtains it. Mi-Yun will also do anything she can to please any of her superiors or her family, desperately wanting to make them happy of her more than anyone else. Honour is something she is always keeping in mind when fulfilling her duties, and by acting out her role as a pawn to the best of her abilities is how she strives to please her family.
With those she considers close, though, she is much less up-tight. Friendly, smiley and above all, much more upbeat. For those she cares about, Mi-Yun does her best to prevent her less pleasant qualities from showing; however there are times where she can’t stop even her friends from irritating her. She strives for companionship, though, and desperately wants someone to be with, even if they never have a proper conversation. She longs for someone who will accept her for who she is, someone who can see past her disability. There are very few people she is close to, however, as she fears that she will never receive that kind of affection, and is too proud to let herself get hurt.
The other problem is that, despite how much she likes certain people, Mi-Yun cannot help but always feel an underlining jealous of everyone. She resents the fact that everyone else can speak and say exactly what they want, and sometimes wishes that somebody could know what it’s like to be mute so they understand her a bit more. For there are times when she does feel like a social outcast. Unsure about how people will react to her, and envious of how lucky others are to be normal, she tends to be rather cold towards strangers, keeping her distance and going about life sticking with those she knows are people who will not judge her. However, that feels like very few to Mi-Yun.

History: The Park family came from a long line of Medius nobility, dating far back to when their ancestors were some of the first Bishops for the Grey Royal Family. So when Mi-Yun was born, her parents both knew she would be a member of the Royal court when she grew up. Both hoped to have a daughter who would inherit the family tradition of being a noble with higher authority like her father was, a man who had recently retired from his position as a Bishop. However, things hardly ever go according to plan.
At first glance, Mi-Yun seemed like a normal child. She was curious, playful, attached to her mother's hip. But there was always something slightly off about her. And for the first year of her life, her parents couldn't put a finger on it. By the time she was two, though, they had worked out exactly what the matter was. Despite still being young, Mi-Yun still hadn't learnt to talk. Many people tried reassuring the family that it wasn't a problem, that it just takes longer for some children... but the Parks just knew something wasn't right. So, after much debating on the subject, Mi-Yun was taken to the best Doctor in Medius. And what he told them shattered the family dreams of Mi-Yun's future in an instant.
The little girl was mute.
Her vocal chords had never fully developed when she was born, preventing her from speaking. Mi-Yun's parents both knew that having such a disability would make it hard, almost impossible for Mi-Yun to make it into the Royal Court of Medius. For how could a child with a disability ever fit into a Royal court? Despite the huge problem facing her family, Mi-Yun's mother and father both decided to do all they could to try and fix the problem. They taught Mi-Yun to communicate through simple sign language, and encouraged her to write as a means of speaking. All the while Mi-Yun's father constantly dragged her along to formal events, surrounding her with other members of nobility to get the child used to the lifestyle of the courts.
Their efforts seemed to work. Despite the major issue of an inability to speak, Mi-Yun became incredibly popular amongst the nobles. Perhaps they found her entertaining, but none the less she made a good impression on them. The fact she was from the Park family helped support her cause as well. When the girl turned sixteen, she was taken away from home to be trained to be a pawn. Despite the fact it was nowhere near as high a role as what her parent's originally had wanted for their child, they were more than happy that they were able to get Mi-Yun into the court of Medius. She was fortunate, to say the least.
The training to become a pawn was tough for Mi-Yun, to say the least. But she threw herself into it, not wanting to disappoint her parents. Quite honestly, she didn't want to follow the role of a Pawn, however she would not voice these thoughts. Mi-Yun had a feeling one of the only reasons she had ever been selected to be a potential Pawn was because they Royal family knew she couldn't exactly conspire against them easily. This was a little demotivating for her, yet she continued working as hard as she could to keep her family happy.
Her hard work paid off, for soon she was made an official pawn. Although nowhere near as glamorous as Knight, Rook or Bishop, her achievement pleased her parents, which was good enough for Mi-Yun.
Additional Information: Her cousin is Yong Soo Im, the Bishop from Penuria. She hasn't come into much contact with him because they are from different kingdoms, however from what she has seen of her cousin, Mi-Yun finds him rather... immature for her.
Mi-Yun is mute, leaving her unable to talk or make any type of noise (e.g. a scream or laugh). The only noises she can make are raspy groans, sighs or very faint sounds that might be the attempts of words. It can be irritating trying to get people to understand her, so she always has a notebook and pen to hand so she can write down what she wants to tell or say to people.
Roleplay Sample: The woman sat in the shade of a tree, tucked away from sight as her eyes skimmed over the pages of the book that was rested in her lap. It was a surprisingly nice day for Medius’ standards; the sky was much less ominous that usual and the ground beneath her was much more dry than usual. In the tree above her, a bird was chirping happily, disrupting the silence and making the mood much more comfortable. Mi-Yun Park smiled ever so slightly as her dark eyes ran across the crisp pages, absorbing every word that lay written there with fascination.
"Now why can’t real life be as easy as it is in stories?" she thought to herself, leaning her head back against the tree trunk behind her to stare up at the sky that was peeping through the canopy of leaves above. "Everything always ends in “happily ever after.” The characters are so lucky."
A raspy noise escaped her throat as her vocal chords forced themselves to make some form of sound. To those who had known Mi-Yun for a while, they would have been able to tell that was a desperate attempt for a laugh. She wanted to laugh at how overly-sweet stories were, how unrealistic it all was and yet how she enjoyed that. But it was physically painful to try and force her voice to work though, and so the pawn let out an exasperated sigh before sitting up and glancing back at her book. A small frown crept across her face, erasing any previous expression into one of a blank and slightly down-cast look.
"It’s rare to find happily ever after. I really should stop getting my hopes up."
