Special Features:
- Heracles has a number of scars on his body. Most of them are from sparring and accidents while practicing or exercising. Prominent scarring across his upper his upper chest.
- Herc’s hair cannot be brushed. Cannot. It’s very wavy and utterly untamed. Any attempt to fix his hair ends with no progress being made, and often only makes it worse.
Likes:
- Food – Heracles happens to be very critical of the food he receives from other people. As a rather good cook himself, he finds it difficult to not be picky about food. He doesn’t outright refuse to eat food he doesn’t like, but don’t expect him to send his compliments to your chef if the food is sub-par, or anywhere under anything he can do himself. Cooking for himself seems to be less and less of a requirement lately.
- Cats – Dear God, this man loves cats. As a child he wanted to own as many as he could, but he never got the chance. Even when he grew up he didn’t really get the chance to own more than one cat… so he makes do by spoiling as many strays as he can. As of right now, Heracles currently owns a single cat – as in, this cat belongs to him. Her name is Nike and she is a white short hair.
- Heroic Sculpture – Art that captures heroes in the acts of bravery or glory are the kinds of art that attract and fascinate Heracles, and this particularly when displayed in sculpture. Heracles also enjoys the stories behind the art itself, and sometimes analyzes what the piece is trying to convey to gauge whether or not it captures the idea well or not.
- Mythology – Gods, goddesses. Creation, destruction. The hubris of men and the misfortune that befalls them as a result. Heracles loves stories like this, be they tragedies, comedies, dramas, or action. If he isn’t sleeping or digging, you can generally find his nose stuffed into a good story.
- Archaeology – The process of sitting down in the dirt uncovering something ancient is both exciting and meditative to Heracles. He finds it relaxing and it’s one of his favorite hobbies. There’s something special about touching or finding an object no one else has seen for thousands of years, and it’s a thrill he never stops feeling when he discovers something wonderful.
- Collecting – What Heracles digs up, he also kind of likes to keep. He cleans and prepares and displays everything of value that he finds, and guards these treasures with his life. He doesn’t let anyone touch them. No one. They’re fragile and the ignorant can break them.
- Naps – Because Heracles gets as little sleep as he does, naps are a very welcome break from every day life. Heracles has the rare ability to sleep almost anywhere as long as he’s capable of getting comfortable, and he also tends to be a heavy sleeper as well.
Dislikes:
- Artifact thieves – Okay, Heracles doesn’t count here. He knows how to take care of, preserve, and display and he has a rather large collection in his office. Oh no, he means the people that mishandle and destroy the sites or artifacts in such a way that they are irreparable, or steal the artifacts from their sites while wrecking them.
- Disrespect of his collection – One does not go up to Heracles and tell him the stuff he collects is junk, or tell him it’s worthless. He actually is very proud of the items he’s managed to procure and display, and he studies them often. Ask him anything and you’ll get a pretty in-depth education… but make sure you don’t tell him it’s boring.
- Desks that are uncomfortable – He can’t sleep in these! And yes, even desks are suitable prey for the sleepy head of Heracles.
- Bad Actors – Both in reference to theater and the people that couldn’t put of a convincing façade if it was required of them to save their lives. Bad liars are annoying because one knows they are lying right off the bat, and one gets rather annoying when someone they are talking to thinks one is stupid enough to believe it. Heracles also can’t stand to watch actors that are painfully back – the kind that have no tone or inflection or sense of emotion, that shout all their lines are monotone. Why do these people even bother?
- Dogs that chase cats – Heracles actually doesn’t mind dogs at all. It’s the dogs that chase his cat around that bug him. She’s a fairly small breed and almost unable to fend for herself against anything twice her size, so to see someone’s mutt go after her is kind of enraging.
- Being woken up – Look, he knows if people wake him up, it’s probably important. That doesn’t mean he enjoys it, and it’s seriously a peeve of his. The harsher the method of waking him up, the more of a grouch he’ll be when he shakes the sleep out of his eyes.
Strengths:
- Deductive Reasoning – Though he might not appear to be, Heracles is actually a very brilliant thinker. He’s a cunning strategist, capable of foreseeing consequences long before they happen. He’s capable of deducing many possible outcomes for a single action, and can plan accordingly. Unfortunately this sometimes leads to him overthinking simple things, and his reactions are thus delayed longer than they probably should be, but overall he considers this a talent of his.
- Realistic – Heracles is terribly blunt, period. He will not sugar-coat anything, and though he might beat around the bush every now and then, he’ll always give you the facts. He isn’t an optimistic person, but nor is he very pessimistic. He is aware of the world around him and knows hoping for the best ends in disappointment and expecting the worst only leads to anxiety and depression. He performs with realistic expectations in mind and does not hope for miracles – those rarely ever happen anyway.
- Dexterous – Heracles might look sluggish, but he is far from it. He has powerful muscles, and is rather skilled with a number of weapons ranging from your casual sword, to longer weapons such as spears and poleaxes. He is surprisingly light on his feet as well, and seems to find little effort in bending and dodging. He finds that the further away he can strike an opponent, the more likely he is to get out of a situation unscathed. One could say he has both reach and flexibility…
- Physically Strong – Unlike his deceptive dexterity, one can tell Herc is strong just from the way he looks. He’s rather thickly built and works himself hard to maintain his strength. There’s gossip that Heracles can rip apart his own clothing by flexing his muscles enough, but whether or not this is actually true is unknown… as no one has ever seen him do this.
- Protective – Heracles is a defender, and he will step between danger and the helpless without a moment’s hesitation. He seeks to protect those that cannot protect themselves, and desires to fight for a cause he believes is just. His loyalty to those that need him is damn near unwavering, but he finds himself a little conflicted between others when he tries to extend his aid to more people than he can handle.
Weaknesses:
- Short Attention Span – Yeah, holding this guy’s attention can get a little difficult if you don’t know exactly how to grab him. He has very specific interests, and tends to drift away if he finds himself in a conversation he can’t relate to. This doesn’t really help when he absolutely has to pay attention. As everyone knows, doing anything gets tedious if it’s a requirement.
- Often Sleepy – Heracles doesn’t seem to get enough sleep, and usually only manages a couple of hours per day. His days are normally interspersed with several naps in between work. Waking him up from one of these deep naps takes a lot of work, and if you want to really make sure he gets up, roll him onto the floor.
- Stubborn – Whether you see this as a good thing or a bad thing, Heracles can be incredibly stubborn. Once he has his mind set on someone or set on a task or decision, to sway him is a feat of, pardon the pun, Herculean task of epic proportions. He seems to believe that when given a command it is his job and duty to see it through to the end, as long as it is not in conflict with his own morality. Thus, while it can be beneficial by way of sheer perseverance, it may also be detrimental in that he is a difficult person to argue with and convince when his mind is made up.
- Cold Exterior – Heracles often comes off as cold to people, at least from a first glance. He has a very serious face that he never lets drop unless appropriate or in the mood, and his eyes tend to be lidded as if irritated or bored. He’s a very stoic-looking man, and might seem intimidating at first. Despite this, Heracles warms up fairly well to people he meshes with and people might eventually realize that their worries were a little bit unfounded.
Dreams:
- To be Important – Heracles wants to feel integral to any story he finds himself in, to play a part in it that will make him feel like his plotline is just as important as everyone else. He wants to feel as if he has a specific place in the world that no one else can fill, like he has a meaning beyond simply existing and being alive.
- Achieve Glory – Heracles knows full well he will never feel proud of himself if he stands around waiting for opportunity to come to him. He’s always been the kind of person who worked hard for what he wanted, and if this means hard work, then so be it. Heracles wants to do something with himself so incredible, so amazing, that everyone will know him by name. Call it ego, or whatever you want, but deep down inside Heracles feels like he must drive himself to the limits to become someone of great worth to the world.
- To Find an Amazing Thing – One of Heracles’ dreams is to discover something so incredible that it blows the whole world away. In such a way, this desire goes hand in hand with his need to achieve something glorious. He will have his name somewhere when he digs up something to make the world gasp in awe – just you watch.
Fears:
- History losing importance – Heracles has already seen that young people today are incredibly apathetic about history and what it entails. Many people think it no longer matters because it all happened in the past. It terrifies him to think about a time when people will no longer care about the past, and when that happens everything he loves will collapse into oblivion and be utterly obliterated off the face of the planet.
- Rusty Artifacts – He doesn't exactly enjoy getting tetanus boosters every now and again, but even when he does the prospect of rusty artifacts just makes him cringe, considering they flake all over and could easily just get stuck under his skin like splinters. He handles these very carefully, and often defaults them to someone else.
- Failing to Protect – Sometime in the future, someone is going to need his help. He feels it, he knows it, and he’s prepared for it. What frightens him about this, however, is the ever-looming risk, that when he’s needed he won’t be able to do anything. He’s fully prepared to give up his life for this cause, but to have someone die on him when he’s capable of protecting them is a genuine fear that he thinks about often.
- Amputation – Whether medically or because someone lopped his arm off with a weapon, losing limbs doesn’t sounds… pleasant. Of course it wouldn’t be. Who actually wants to lose a limb? To Heracles, such a thing would basically render him without any purpose or use, and it’s probably the worst thing that can happen to him short of dying. At least after death he doesn’t have to worry about the fact he’s dead.
Personality:
Heracles can get very loud. Not in the sense that Heracles screams everything he says, or is intentionally being obnoxious. Heracles is actually usually a very quiet person. He’s very social, but he moderates. In this regard he’s more of a listener than a speaker. But boy, when he gets going HE GETS LOUD. There are a lot of things Heracles is interested in, and getting him into any one of these subjects puts you at risk for a sudden torrent of energy and words. Be careful if you ever try to converse with Heracles and allow him to pick a subject, because if you nudge him in the direction of philosophy, archaeology, history, or collecting, expect him to wonder incredulously if you somehow don’t understand.
He’s very passionate about a lot of things. He absolutely loves what he does and it goes hand-in-hand with his loudness in the classroom. He never gets tired of explaining things to people that may not get the material he enjoys, and this makes him very approachable for some people. He indulges in hobbies in his free time, and actually seems to have a very marked joy for writing about them. He’ll make notes, and then go into detail later, having folders upon folders of description and observation. For all that he does in the military, to see Heracles’ own collections of items of interest might perhaps intrigue the curious onlooker.
His animation in character is the downfall of many people. His excitable nature wouldn’t work if he were not very animated, but he pulls it off well. If presenting something of interest, Heracles is prone to movement, wandering back and forth between point A and point B while trying to make his point. He explains the subject through an exaggerated wave of hands, with comments of, “This is absolutely incredible!” while a massive smile is planted very plainly on his face. In fact, he’s probably received more suggestions from his others to sit still more so they can concentrate on what he’s saying, but he doesn’t expect that to happen anytime soon.
This man can talk about the same subject, nonstop, for hours. He always has something to say and he can stay on course without deviating (unless promptly and roughly sidetracked). This also makes him able to concentrate on certain actions until the job is done, under the pretense of “If I get it done now, I can laze about later.” Unfortunately this is a double-edged sword. Heracles becomes so enthralled by a subject that he loses sight of the bigger picture. Flagging him down is one of the most difficult things anyone will ever have to deal with, which is funny because he makes a joke out of distracting his companions AWAY from him to “test their ability to pay attention.”
In stark contrast to his situational focus, is the incredible ease with which he may be distracted. When cornered by a particularly uninteresting thing, Heracles loses his ability to focus on the task at hand and may find himself staring off into space while contemplating various philosophical questions. Figuring out whether or not Heracles has utterly lost interest in you is easy. He becomes blank-faced and stoic, staring in one direction without his eyes moving as you do. Nothing short of punching his shoulder will cause him to shake out of this trance, because while you’re talking about things he absolutely can’t find interest in, he’s playing with cats in the inner recesses of his mind, and having a hell of a lot more fun than you are.
Although Heracles will make it clear if he doesn’t like someone, he gets a lot of joy out of being subtle about his dislike of certain people. He makes a hobby out of dropping sarcastic, back-handed comments in the middle of conversing with people. He is not malicious and doesn’t particularly go out of his way to hurt people, and if he happens to target someone out of annoyance, dislike, or rivalry, most of his actions are more prankish than violent. There’s a lot more to laugh at when the price is pride. It takes quite a bit of push to get him to this point. If you’ve found your name of his list of people he dislikes, you know you’ve done something incredibly wrong.
Heracles is a very meticulous individual. As a somewhat self-proclaimed and well-practiced archaeologist, Heracles is very detail-oriented. He’s delicate and gentle, and very patient. He has a keen eye for small objects and will thoroughly investigate every bit of dirt to make sure he doesn’t miss even the tiniest of artifacts. This dedication to detail also makes for a very thorough strategist, as Heracles is the kind of man to obsess over the consequences of one move to the next, seeking to minimalize damage while maximizing the potential victory.
Heracles is also very chaotically organized. He orders everything he owns in such a way that one would scarcely believe he even knows where everything is, which is pretty far from the truth. Heracles is actually quite skilled at remembering where objects go, and makes a habit of never changing order once that order is determined. Although his belongings look to be strewn about, there’s a very specific organization going on, and if you happen to move one object from one place to another, he’ll frantically search for it because to him, it has suddenly disappeared off the face of the planet. Unless his organization is purposely or inadvertently sabotaged by another being, Heracles will almost never lose track of anything he owns and can find it effortlessly.
He is also a very romantic and sexual individual. He as a smooth voice that can be sensual and easy to listen to, he has a way with words that can make people melt. He seems to make a bit of a hobby out of this? Romance is something he loves to partake of, especially if it ends up leading someone to his bed. He isn’t, by any means of the word, careless though. He’s a very considerate lover and tends to put them before himself, even if they only happen to be together for a night or two. Everyone he involves himself with deserves a degree of respect and dedication, unless they decide to take his good manners and shove them in his face. Despite this, Heracles is also very dedicated to his work and while it might seem as though he simply sleeps around, it’s something he only does on his downtime more than anything, as he tends to concentrate more on getting a job done before indulging in his more carnal desires.
Heracles happens to think he has a great sense of humor. Whether or not this is true probably depends on whom he’s speaking to. He thinks he’s hilarious, but a lot of the times he kind of makes people groan. He especially likes making history jokes. He also has a habit of prodding and poking at people, but it’s normally just silly teasing meant just to get a laugh. He doesn’t normally like to provoke people, that’s way too much effort for him. If Heracles decides to make a joke at your expense, watch his expression. There’s a very subtle difference between a prank meant to humiliate you and a joke meant to simply tease, and you can see it plain on his face with the degree of his smile.
Heracles isn’t the type of guy who will turn down an opportunity to have a good time with friends. Life is too stressful and busy to decline any chances to relax! He’ll go out and drink with buddies and the like, but don’t expect to see him at anything huge. He’s sociable, but he doesn’t make friends with everyone he meets and tends to pick one or two people that he’ll trust and hang out with above everyone else.
History:
As a child, Heracles seemed to think of his family as a group of people of substantially good character and breeding, despite being somewhat broken and small. For as long as Heracles could remember, there seemed to be an emptiness in the family that could only have been caused by things he couldn’t remember from the past. Having lost his mother before he was even aware of the world around him, he didn’t feel much of an attachment to the member of the family he never actually knew, but the gloominess was nonetheless perpetuated by figures that very much did remember her.
At an early age, he seemed very much aware of what his interests were, aside from a near obsessive love of feline that often resulted in his coming home scratched and crying. He didn’t develop a knack for handling the creatures until he grew up much later, but this constant infliction of stinging wounds would serve as deterrents from touching everything fluffy that seemed to beckon him with their cuteness. Rather, Heracles found himself indulging in other pleasures. Like most other boys he was utterly obsessed with getting himself as filthy as he possibly could, often coming home in so many layers of dirt one could scarcely believe there was a child underneath.
What Heracles loved more than anything was exploration and learning, and many times he had gone off on his own to play in places he had no business being. The woods or in water, or far away from home, forcing his father on desperate manhunts in order to bring him home. Heracles surprised people with what seemed to be an innate sense of direction, and would always make it home for dinner and surprise people who would come back to the house, confident that this time he’d been lost for good. Though reprimanded often, Heracles never took to heart any of these teachers, and as he grew up retained a thick sense of rebelliousness that told him rules were meant to be broken. It made life a little more fun, so it wasn’t surprising when the young man would actively seek to get a rise out of people.
He was very adamant in what he liked and disliked, much to frustration of his father and any of his tutors. He didn’t have his current sleeping problem in his childhood, but he was just as scatterbrained and just as big a dreamer, preferring the confines of his mind to the education people were attempting to force on him. Though intelligent and finding little problem in completing the assigned work, the issue was always just getting him to do it in the first place. He was, essentially, a very bored young man who saw no use in purpose completing assignments that were unchallenging. Years of reprimanding eventually seemed to instill the reasoning that simply powering through without complaints was just as effective and ignoring the problem – perhaps even more so considering consequences were rarely an issue.
He continued counting such boredom with his hobbies even as he got older, but needing something constructive to do with his life he eventually found himself involved with the military. His seemingly natural knack for combat was both masked and unexpected. It was purely defensive, however. He was good at not getting hit, and didn’t seem to have much of a heart to actually hit back at people whom he saw as allies. He admitted he’d rather protect people from harm than go out and fight, and it was noticed that he got discouraged when it was mentioned that the two actions often went hand in hand. He did buck up eventually, but it took a lot of prodding. Stubborn Heracles didn’t see the point in fighting people who weren’t giving him their all. Was there ever really intent to kill in those drills? Not really, it was hardly a match for a real situation he knew he would eventually be placed in.

Roleplay Sample:
Few things existed in life that were more annoying or obnoxious than the most tedious points of archaeology. As a whole, the field of study was great, a physical take on history with actual legitimate proof that something happened, facts not included and speculation abounding. But God, did it get dull. Make no mistake, Heracles absolutely loved what he did, but he’d be lying if he said he enjoyed every bit of it. No matter what career one embarked on, there were always going to be bits and pieces that pissed one off.
That’s exactly what Heracles was doing. Tedious, boring work. No, not even that—tedious boring work that he had to go back and correct. Heracles made the mistake of allowing lab interns to try their hand at database work. How hard could it be? Copy from cards, put them into a grid sheet. Not hard at all! Imagine Heracles’ frustration when he went back through all the completed lines, only to find that all of them were wrong? How hard could it possibly be to type things.
Apparently, very hard, considering a large portion of what was written was skill-less and annoying shorthand and text speak. This was a professional database, not some chat room online! Who did these kids think they were working for and why was Heracles just mentally ranting to himself? Heracles groaned, frustrated, while pressing his fingers to his temple. He hated going back and fixing mistakes, especially for this. He wouldn’t mind so much if he were actually making progress, but no! He was backtracking, basically! It wasn’t even just the boredom that irritated him, but the sheer slowness of his progress.
Heracles somehow managed through will and patience to get through the last few weeks with just the use of his left arm, his dominant right arm being held stiffly in a cast, which made the acts of both typing and writing awkward adventures he chose to not embark on. Luckily, he had students eager for extra credit, who could stand up in the front of the class and write points on the board for him, and in their downtime draw pictures of poptart cats.
The day was slowly giving way to night. He needed a break. This could wait until tomorrow…. And maybe next time he allowed a student to touch his system, he’d properly drill into them that screwing it up would get them a failing grade.
Yes, a break would be nice… he desperately wanted one.
He saved his progress, jotted down on a sticky note where he left off, and then shut down his computer, debating whether or not he would come back. Nah, he was done for the night. He was a little too frustrated with the day to bother, and he felt as if he needed a nap somewhere to ward off the bubbling anger. God, that student—no. no, Heracles, leave it alone. You can’t change it. Okay, that’s a lie. You did change it.
He reorganized the papers on his desk (if organization is what this can be called), threw on his jacket, and finally exited his dark office, closing the door behind him and locking it. Unlike some professors, there was very little reason for anyone to try to break into this particular room, as every artifact he might be working with was locked up tightly elsewhere. A relief, that, as there was a pretty ridiculous market in the artifact trade outside of professionalism. Bleh.
He had students do that sometimes, too. He didn’t expect any of them to be involved in criminal activities, but every now and then there would be a mysterious disappearance of items from their homes within their laboratory, which Heracles sometimes attributed to students who just could help but add to their collections. He couldn’t blame them, as he had similar thoughts every now and then, but surely self control wasn’t that difficult.
To hear some of the things that went through Heracles’ mind, one might assume he absolutely hated all of his students! This was, however, untrue. He disliked only a choice few whom he had seen to deserve the dislike. Most of his students were rather enjoyable and responsible… the irresponsibility was only a problem once in a blue moon, but the repercussions sometimes lasted for much longer afterward.
Like that damn database, only made more difficult to work with by the fact of his somewhat maimed right arm.
He had no reason to expect anyone to come knocking anyway, as his appointment hours had long passed and anyone that really wanted to talk to him would email him, so hopefully there would be no surprises. How many people were even still here?
With his jacket hung over him as if it were as cape (Don’t judge, he thought it made him look several degrees cooler!), Heracles started his journey back home, down stairs, across hallways, until the familiar face of a coworker came into view, him also escaping the confines of the Imperial College offices into the outside world.
Heracles’ lips tugged into a slight smile, and he picked up his pace a little, just enough to casually and naturally catch up to the man without causing too much of a stir. They were entirely different fields and departments, but he knew who Yong Soo was. What was a little company before leaving?
“I didn’t think anyone else would be here!” Heracles spoke when he felt he was within earshot of the Korean, lagging only a few steps behind him. Not for long, however, his stride finally closing the gap until he walked alongside him. “I try not to stay too late anymore. Last time I tried that, I ended up getting really sidetracked.”
Actually, wasn’t Soo a better target for criminals than some dinky archaeologist like Heracles? Sure, they had a good reason for picking him up off the campus, but it wasn’t as if deciphering the tablet (which he never did!) would destroy a nation.
