Personality: Yong Soo is an out-going, energetic teenager who loves to run around and have fun. He cannot stand being forced to sit through meetings or be serious. It’s actually quite a wonder how he’s managed to even keep his title as the White Queen’s Bishop, especially at such a young age.
He’s very social and talks to anyone and everyone, even if they’re others from Pariter. He doesn’t really understand why their Kingdoms hate each other so much. Regardless of what Kingdom anybody is from, Yong Soo flashes a bright smile and a friendly hello. He’s like meeting new people because they’re interesting to him.
Yong Soo loves to show physical affection to people and likes to hug them. However, if somebody suddenly grabs him, he’ll most likely writhe around trying to get out of their grip because he’s so ticklish. It physically hurts him and it’s hard for him to breathe. But when they stop and he likes them, Yong Soo will probably grow very attached to the person. He likes having his head being petted.
Despite his funny and silly nature, Yong Soo can be serious when required. He’s just not good at forcing himself to be. He takes care of anything his Queen requires, as soon as he’s asked. He’s extremely loyal, and in that way, is similar to a dog faithfully following its master. His feelings can be hurt easily, and he’ll act like a kicked puppy. Yong Soo is very sweet and thoughtful, and just likes to make people smile. When he’s around, he doesn’t want anyone to be frowning or sad and will do whatever he can to cheer them up.
He’s pretty ignorant to things around him, and in a way, thinks outside the box -- except he’s not seeing the box in the first place. He can be surprisingly simple minded in the way he thinks. He doesn’t understand sarcasm, and seems to only hear the main meaning of a sentence. He can never detect if someone is hinting at something else, and is probably why he’s called an idiot so often.
Yong Soo doesn’t mean to be annoying – really. There are pranksters who try to be on purpose, but he only wants to make the other person smile. (Occasionally, Yong Soo sometimes likes to pull a prank to annoy a person, but it’s not very common.) He often tries to get them to laugh by doing something silly, but people always seem to yell at him for it or tell him to shut up. Regardless, he doesn’t give up.
Many people assume Yong Soo always wants attention, hence why he’s so bouncy, energetic and irritating. They’re not entirely wrong. Yong Soo cannot stand to be ignored because he feels like people are shunning him and that they hate him. He had a hard time when he was younger and has problems with being left alone or ignored. It brings back extremely bad memories, and it could lead to him having a breakdown. He hates talking about his past, so his solution is to just prevent a breakdown from happening in the first place by getting people’s attention – even if he’ll get reprimanded later.
History: Yong Soo grew up within quite a large family with seven siblings – three sisters and four brothers. He was the youngest, besides his twin. His family owned a small restaurant in the capital city of Penuria. They were all quite close and spent a lot of time together, enjoying each other’s company while they worked. Their parents would cook, while Yong Soo and his siblings did a variety of jobs including serving customers, clearing tables and other such things. It was a good life, until Yong Soo turned twelve.
A little after his birthday, Yong Soo found himself growing more distant from his family, especially from his twin. A rift was beginning to form, and it was separating the family. His siblings argued with each other constantly, and tried to defy their parents. Yong Soo attempted to cheer them all up to settle everything back to normal, but it only seemed to make things worse. Everyone snapped at the boy, and Yong Soo found himself shunned by his whole family. He often would lie on his bed late at night and cried himself to sleep, but he would wake up with a bright smile and the determination to make someone happy that day, no matter what it took.
Another year passed, and their family restaurant wasn’t doing very well. Their family was beginning to fall into poverty, and Yong Soo didn’t know what to do. One day, he decided to go and search for a job around the city to earn money. After walking around for five hours asking if people needed apprentices and being turned away time and time again, Yong Soo’s feet were blistered and he was ready to go home and give up. He happened to be passing by the castle and gazed wistfully at it. He turned to leave, but ended up passing out from exhaustion and dehydration.
When he awoke, Yong Soo was in a warm, comfortable bed and being tended to by a man he didn’t recognize in a large room. He asked where he was, and was told he was found unconscious by some guards outside the castle and brought inside. The man asked him what he had been doing, and Yong Soo explained the situation as he was given some water. The man nodded throughout the whole thing, deep in thought. He then asked Yong Soo if he had knowledge about religion or education at all. He said no, not really, but he would like to learn more about everything if he could. It was then that the man revealed himself to be the White Queen’s current bishop, much to Yong Soo’s surprise. He told him that he didn’t have much time left, as he was rather old, and needed an apprentice. Yong Soo was confused, considering he had just said he barely knew anything, but the man said that he had potential and seemed to be a quick learner. Yong Soo was hesitant because he was unsure of himself, but after a little coaxing from the Bishop and how he could help his family, Yong Soo agreed. He didn’t have any belongings with him, so he never returned home.
The next four years were spent with Yong Soo training hard every day to learn all of the duties of a Bishop. He studied the Kingdoms’ history, Penuria’s in particular, and greatly improved his reading and writing. He learned to negotiate, and observed several meetings between his teacher and other Bishops. He was taught to learn all sides of the situation before jumping to conclusions, and how to make the right choices to help his Queen to the best of his ability. He learned everything there could to be learned about religion, and was quite fascinated by it. Thankfully, his teacher was kind, patient and understanding with him. When he passed away just after Yong Soo turned sixteen, he grieved for quite a while. His teacher had been more of a family to him than his actual blood relatives.
But for the sake of his teacher’s wishes and the Kingdom, Yong Soo managed to move on to become the official Bishop of the White Queen.
Additional Information: No matter what, do not get Yong Soo sugar high. Ever.
Maybe because he looks a few years older because of his height and build, people pick on him more for being “stupid” and too silly and that he should act his age. Yong Soo hasn’t had an easy life, but he’s extremely grateful for where he is now. He’s happy and content and does his best every day.
He anonymously sends money to his family to help them live a decent life. Sometimes he wonders if they even miss him.
Roleplay Sample: He scrambled up the rickety, wooden stairs and barely winced as he felt splinters embedding themselves into his feet. He fled to the temporary safety of his shared room and buried himself beneath the covers, wrapping his shivering body with a ragged and torn blanket. Everything hurt.
His family was fighting again. Screams of fury filled with venom were spat viciously at each other, words of contempt and loathing being used as daggers to stab each other. Two of his siblings were out shopping, but the rest were dangerously snarling at each other, like predators fighting to keep their prey. Accusations and the slamming of a fist against the kitchen counter could be heard through the think floor. Shattering sounds were heard; a glass had probably been flung across the room and was now lying in shards at somebody’s feet.
Yong Soo clenched his eyes shut, and felt something burning hot gathering at the corners. They stung. He wished that his family would stop quarrelling and that everything would go back to the way it was before – when they were all happy and still loved each other. The only thing that remained now was hostility and mistrust. He didn’t understand how they had even come to this point, but maybe if he did, he would be able to resolve the problem.
If only it were that simple.
