Yao is a rather short, feminine man, and his choice in clothing makes it even harder to discern his gender. So no one’s really sure if he’s male or female. His clothing choice can be considered very unusual -as it’s the clothing style of a dead past. Silk robes, garments fit for a King or Queen that are very hard to dress yourself in even if you’re use to it. The silk is always quite aw-inspiring as it’s made from top quality silk and other materials as well. Some of his clothes have very intricate designs on them while others are simple in comparison. Another noticeable thing about his wardrobe is, it’s very hard to catch a look at his face. More precisely, he always seems to have his eyes covered with a white fabric when he does receive guests. It makes some of the very few people who have heard of him curious as to what is hidden under the fabric.
His eyes, which you’d have to be very sneaky to get a peek at, are a soft honey brown. His long, flowing hair that seems soft as a woman’s nicely kept hair is also a brown, but not a golden brown like his eyes. His skin is very porcelain pale, almost to the point of seeming translucent like the moon. On his lower back, just above his rear on the left side, Yao has a painting -more commonly known as a tattoo of a ‘panda’ face. Also, above that along his back he has a long large scar from being struck from behind, having been caught unaware. The last thing that can be noted about Yao is that he has a straw basket which holds in it a strange creature known as a panda. A small one, so presumably a baby panda. As he is a hermit and has only one attendant, this creature is likely one of his closest relations.
Likes:
- Cute Things; Yao is rather fond of cute things. Like plush toys, children, small animals. More so ‘adorable things’ would be a better way of phrasing it.
- Children; Besides the fact they’re cute, Yao is very fond of children for the fact they never cease to amaze him and he’s got a pretty serene and nurturing personality to begin with.
- Food; He enjoys good food, as it warms the belly and can make you feel at peace and content. It’s the staple of life and wellness.
- Politeness; Yao encourages politeness, well, more like, if you aren’t polite he’ll send you away immediately. If he wanted to spend time with impolite and rude people he would not live in isolation from others.
- Company; This is a surprising fact, but, even though he is a hermit. He does get lonely and wonder if his descendants would be a warm family. He very much enjoys good company. That is why he keeps his pet and lets his attendant stay by his side.
- Colors; Colors are wonderful, especially if you paint or sew clothes. Colors can express so many things, so many emotions. Yao enjoys the freedom of creativity they give.
- Control/Order; Yao can be a tad bit controlling. It is part of the reason he’s so reserved and does not let much about himself be known. He does not like others to have a upper hand on him, as he does not trust them.
- Erhu; It is another thing of the old world, quite ancient in fact. Yao enjoys playing it very much. As it’s very soothing and calming for him. It is a bit tricky, but he has had ages to learn and plays it quite beautifully. He also enjoys playing the flute.
- Memories; Although some are sad, he still likes every single memory. As they’re what connects him to the past. They remind him he had a past and that he is a living being apart of this world, in some form or way.
- Traditional Dance; Yao is intrigued by, and has become quite decent at the traditional dance of a nation from the old world. -- Well, quite a few of the dances to be more precise.
- Serenity; He’s all for peace and quite and he happens to have a Koi Pond in the inner sanctum of his home. He’ll spend lazy days perched on the rocks around it, with a hand dipped in for the Koi to brush past. The plant decour for this garden area is mostly bamboo for his panda to eat, but there are some various flowers and other plant life, like herbs, peonies, persimmon trees, lotuses, orchids, other flowers and plant life, and White Mulberry trees. Another surprising creature he has lurking here is a creature called a tiger.
- Tea; hot tea is a very calming and relaxing drink. Green tea in particular happens to be the staple of his liquid diet, whether it’s with a meal or by itself or with a snack, tea is always welcomed.
- Gifts; things like jewelry that go with his clothes, or good food, tea leaves, plush toys. Things that suit his fancy. In all honesty, if you don’t bring a gift he’ll accept, his attendant will turn you away at the door, regardless of your status.
- His pets; This is obvious. As he has quite an array of pets. A baby panda, two adult pandas (male and female), two tigers (Male and female), two canaries (Male and Female), even a cricket, domesticated silkworms, Large Royal Goldfish, A Rooster and Hen, and Manchurian Cranes. He’s quite fond of them all and they all reside in the garden in his inner sanctum.
Dislikes:
- PDA; As he doesn’t go out often, due to living in isolation, Yao isn’t use to such things. He doesn’t think family, friend, or even lover displays of affection should be a show. They should be for the people involved. But then again, he never gives anyone much of a chance as he’ll either stand at the top of a set of stairs or he’ll stay on the other side of a intricately made Wall.
- Being interrupted during a meal; Food is a very important thing to him, so he’s not fond of people who interrupt his meal time and will usually have is attendant turn them away at the door insisting they come back later or give up, as he refuses to set his food aside for them, regardless of who they are.
- Crappy food; for obvious reason. No one likes bad food. Why would anyone want to eat food that tastes unappetizing?
- Loud, obnoxious people; It’s rude, and they should consider the people around them a little more!
- People trying to Subjugate him; Particularly royals. He does not belong to any of the nations, even at no one but nobles know he as a real person actually exists, and they know nothing about him.
- Getting close; He tries to keep a distance from most people. Only forming any type of relations with those that he some how becomes fond of, or those he’s known for ages, as he knows once they die, he’ll be the one left to despair in sorrow at their passing.
- Thieves; There have occasionally been thieves, who thought they were brave against the so called ghost. He finds them particularly annoying as his attendant always ends up having to bury what is left after his tiger gets a hold of them.
- Groups; Yao will turn away people if they bring more than five people with them at a time. He does not particularly take to having too many people visit at one go and is rather stern in dealing with it. If some one is already visiting, you’re told to wait or go away. If you bring too many people, you’re told to pick only the most necessary, and no more than five, and have the others wait outside.
- Messiness; He’s not use to it and he’s certainly not fond of it. Even his inner sanctum garden which houses his pets and plants is fairly clean for being a garden. Then again, it’s always carefully managed by him. He even cleans out the koi pond.
- Impatience; for example, being pushed to hurry a scroll. Art can’t be rushed. Perfection takes it’s time. Young people these days need to learn that the right pace in life will get you everywhere, going too slow or too fast will get you no where.
- Crying; He hates when people cry, because then he feels bad and will cave in. He thinks it’s a dirty trick. But he also dislikes it because he feels helpless when he can’t comfort those who are truly crying. He doesn’t like that useless feeling.
- Dependency; Not that he minds others being dependent, or even being dependent on himself. But it hurts his pride when he has to be dependent on others. Which is why he’s very thankful for his attendant -once a child abandoned he’d picked up and raised. So he doesn’t have to feel so humiliated about using his help all the time.
- Calendars; They make him feel old.
- Others being Nosy; He is a mystery for a very good reason. It’s irritating when others ask nosy questions. And of course they won’t get answers.
- Nightmares; who -likes- them? That’s be just weird. Yao particularly dislikes them because his dreams and nightmares are always so vivid.
Strengths:
- Cooking; His attendant can cook, but he’s cooked for himself for as long as he can remember -and for his attendant ever since he picked the other up. So he’s quite a good chef. His cooking skills could put the royal chefs to shame.
- Painting; His calligraphy looks like a work of art -because it is. He doesn’t use a quill, he uses a brush. His calligraphy, and his art work, every single stroke is masterfully placed on the paper or canvas.
- Creation; Creation in general, as he’s very good at embroidery, sewing, and creating the amount of silk necessary for making his robes. He has at least 70 thousand domesticated Silkworms -some spared for breeding, others killed in the cocoon for the cocoon’s silk. This his Garden has many, many mulberry trees as well.
- Care-giving; Obviously, with so many animals and plants, and even his attendant he took in as a young child, Yao is quite good at care giving. He has over the years, taken in orphaned or abandoned children and raised them until they were old enough to be on their own, he always reminds them never to talk about him and sends them off with a smile.
- Dancing/Music; Yao has a godsend ability for playing masterfully on the Erhu and flute and doing traditional dances with almost inhuman grace and flow.
- Mature; He is quite mature, which is no surprise, really.
- Patient/Calm; He has the patience of a saint, most of the time. Although, you need to be careful about which buttons you press.
- Resolute; He has a steadfast resolution, like a great wall. It’s fair to say he’s nearly impossible to corrupt.
- Intelligent; Despite how his eyes are always covered during guests visiting, he’s by no means blind. He’s quite observant, with or without his eye sight and he’s very smart. It won’t be as easy to pull a wool over his eyes as you might think.
- Beauty; Despite what his age may or may not be, he’s quite a site to behold, eyes covered or uncovered. This is why no one can tell his gender. He looks more like he belongs in some King’s harem then in isolation.
Weaknesses:
- Pessimistic; He doesn’t put much faith in the humans that inhabit the world. Thus, he rarely expects anything good from them visiting. Which is why he demands a gift to make it worth his while.
- Temper; Despite his calm, listless, demure nature, he has quite a temper behind him. If you hit the right chords you’ll know automatically. He’ll order you away.
- Listless; As he has a routine that has been there for who knows how long, he does most things in listless silence, as if he expects nothing new to interrupt the normality that has developed around him.
- Judgmental; He can be quite judgmental and not want to deal with people who do not consign to his manners of polite social interaction while in his home. He understands that outside his home he cannot be choosy, but he’d still be judgmental.
- Self-destructive; In a sense, Yao is self-destructive. He does not like being a part of the world, yet he gets lonely and wants company. These two feelings collide very harshly and leave him in a stand still.
- Stern; Yao can be quite stern and most people don’t like having to conform to a certain way of living, which is why all the children but his attendant had chosen to leave for the outside world.
- Demanding; He expects things to stay in his ball court and can be quite demanding of those that are around him.
- Perfectionist; Everything has to be done perfectly or he isn’t content. He’s harshest on himself, but quite harsh on others as well.
- Shy; As he’s withdrawn himself from society, he can come off as quite shy. Always covering his face with his sleeves, keeping words and interactions to a minimum and such.
- Confusing; He tends to confuse people as despite how young he looks, he’s always saying things like, “You young people” or “the youth of today” or “This generation”. And in general calling those that visit little boy or little girl regardless of age. Which can be particularly confusing for those who look older than himself.
- Superstitious; not like, ‘zomg, there’s monsters and demons all around’, but he believes in karma, good luck, and bad luck.
Dreams:
- More children; As he’s fond of raising things, it would be a lie to say he hasn’t thought about going out to procreate again, or take in more orphans.
- Family; This goes along with children, but more specifically, he wishes for a partner he does not have to worry about leaving the world before him. One he can spend his time with.
- The Three Idiot Kingdoms get along; It’s annoying that the Three Idiot Kingdoms are still fighting. The sooner they get over it, the better.
- Correct Questions; When people come, he is rather tricky with answering questions. If you don’t ask the right questions, you will not receive the right answers. He’s waiting for the day some one asks the right questions..
- Death; He’s been alive so long, that he wouldn’t mind it. He doesn’t particularly throw himself into it, but he would not fear it, at the very least.
- Repopulate the world with his pets; the animals he has are very, very dwindled in this world. He hopes to repopulate them enough to put them out into the world. Unfortunately so far, it has been to no use. There’s no nearby bamboo for the pandas and the tigers kept getting killed. The canaries caught by cats. The Domesticated Silkworms unable to live without his care.
- The future; He hopes it will be a good one. That the royals will learn from the mistakes of the past by reading the scrolls he’s written.
- Become apart of the world again; It’s very small, but a small part of his heart hopes to someday re-enter the society of man. But it’s never been a big enough desire to get him out for very long at one given time.
Fears:
- Living forever; He’s already lived so long… He certainly doesn’t want to live forever. That would just be too cruel.
- Pain; Only a masochist likes it. But he doesn’t let it control him. Still, he’d rather avoid any unnecessary pains.
- Dying Alone; Yeah, he is partially afraid of dying all alone. He’d like at least one hand to hold when he goes.
- Being captured or chained up; He’s lived this long without being enslaved to any of the kingdoms and he certainly doesn’t plan on being enslaved any time soon.
- Anything happening to his attendant; His attendant chose to stay with him even after hitting adulthood. So for Yao, this child is an important person. It doesn’t always show, but in the back of his mind he worries about the child leaving for the outside world or anything happening to him.
- Knife at his back; More precisely, he doesn’t like having armed people behind him, although he doesn’t let it show. After a certain incident, he isn’t very trusting of people with weapons being behind him. Thus, he demands all visitors leave weapons with his attendant and they’ll get it back when leaving.
- Being Surprised; He gets very skitterish about people surprising him. So he’s fearful of it as it causes embarrassment if he isn’t careful to hide such skittishness.
- Being Humiliated; He’s got a big amount of pride, so he’s afraid of getting humiliated by others.
- Karma; It’s a very terrifying thing.
Personality:
Yao is a rather mysterious person. Only the Nobles really know of his existence as a person, give or take a few whims of taking in orphans or travelers noticing his large palace when they accidentally travel across his extensive land. However, even among the nobles, his age and gender are unknown. Many things about Yao are kept a secret from them. He’s quite an unyielding person when it comes to such personal information. So needless to say, quite a few rumors about him may or may not exist throughout the royal courts. Like bets to his gender and age or if he’s some type of fairy.
Despite how stand-offish he is with people, he’s quite nurturing. He’s a good care-giver, for people and animals. He has quite a few pets that he puts a lot of effort into raising, a lot of love and time as well. And then of course, he occasionally takes in some orphans or abandoned children and raises them with great care and precision as well. But even those children are unaware of his age or gender. And when they grow old enough, they leave and never talk about him, as his existence isn’t suppose to be a widely known topic. Still, if they could, they’d probably talk about his raising fondly.
Yao is a calm, quite, and mature person. He has years of experience and knowledge. So needless to say, he has years worth of patience learned. He can take the higher road and keep things orderly when he desires to be of any actual aid to those that come visit. However another way of showing his maturity is also sending them away, in a sense. If he knows he’s in no mood to see them, he knows it would be far better to send them away than to see them and snap at him for no reason at all. It’s rather rude to do that, sending them away is the kinder act.
He can be lax, but most generally, Yao is a strict man. If things are not held up to proper protocol by his standard he’ll be harsh. You didn’t bring a gift? Go away. You aren’t using the proper manners in his home? Go away. Things most be done to a T or he won’t be happy. And he certainly won’t go easy on you, even if you are a King or Queen. His way of raising can also be strict, but that’s half of what makes him a good parent. He doesn’t completely baby, but he will occasionally admit himself he might have been a little harsh.
Yao is a judgmental person. He doesn’t like things that go against his beliefs. He doesn’t like people who can’t conform to his mannerisms at least while in his home. He is, in general, a very judgmental person overall. It’s not hard to see either. If you can catch him without the eye cover. His mannerisms never tell too much, but his eyes are quite fiery in delivering the message that his body and mouth does not. Yao is the type of person who will tell you everything he feels about you from his eyes, not his body language or through speaking. When he’s being judgmental of you, his eyes will show a distain. This is why he covers his eyes when he receives visitors.
Despite how calm he is, Yao has quite a temper on him. His temper is very commanding and when he does have to let it surface, he isn’t subtle about it. You will instantly know that you pushed the wrong buttons. He’s not very forgiving toward those who press the wrong nerves, in fact, he can hold quite a grudge. So needless to say, it’s best to watch what you say around Yao as you may end up scorned for a thousand years or more with the way his temper can flare.
Yao can seem masculine or feminine. A lot of time he seems demure and docile, with how reserved he is. Often times, his lower face will be covered by the overly long and wide sleeves. When they aren’t, they’re folded very intricately. His stance and posture is always very straight and graceful and his mild way of talking is, if not a little confusing, very soft spoken unless you get him riled enough to want to yell. Thus, most often he is seemingly very feminine. His masculinity better shows throw when he’s hard at work with his garden or doing actual hard labor around his vast amount of land.
Yao can be very modest or very high and mighty depending on how you put it. His mannerisms screech of pampered house kitty, but the way he does not put himself on a higher pedestal than even the lowest of class shows he is a very modest and thoughtful person. This is another reason for covering his eyes. He does not feel it is very proper to look at others. Of course, there is admittedly another reason for it. But in all generalness, he’s modest and only seems high and mighty.
Surprisingly enough, Yao can be quite sensual. Which is another thing learned from years of experience. When you get him alone in the bed chambers, if you can, it makes you wonder just how many partners he’s actually had. And can be quite a shocking distance from how you normally see him. Of course, there are things here and there in daily life that he does that can be seen as sensual just by how gracefully he does it. So to wrap Yao up, he’s a tiger with many stripes. There’s always something knew to find out, even if you manage to find out something.
History:
Yao was alive when the world was destroyed, not that anyone realizes that. No one would believe it, but of course, even if they did, then they’d have to wonder how long before that was he alive. Questions like, how old was he when the world was destroyed, or how come he hasn’t died like most of the other ancestors. How many times has he watched loved ones pass away without him. How many times did he hold back tears at their funerals. How many lives has he lived.
Things that are too mind-boggling for most human’s to even contemplate. So, as years passed, and the originals passed on, Yao started writing scrolls about the old world to help remind those who were in power and would be in power in the ages to come to not make the mistakes of their ancestors. He found himself roaming from place to place, never settling and always keeping pets with him, as most of their kind had died off during the destruction.
Before the three Great Kingdoms even had a foot in the ground, he had already built his home. He watched as the three grew and grew and aided them, while keeping as distanced as possible. At some point in his life, he had made children and when the woman and the children passed, he exiled himself back to his mansion, losing touch of where his seed had spread to.
Years passed, no one really knows how many, and finally the Kings and Queens of today are in power. He still lives in seclusion, where the three Kingdoms border each other, and only gives advice and scrolls with wisdom when he’s visited by them. He never offers to go out himself. With the ages passing, he’s become forgotten by all but the nobles and a select few children over the years he’s spent.

Descendants; No one really knows of this, or how many generations ago for that matter, but Yao left his Mansion which has a design based from one of the dead countries of the past’s past, and procreated Who his descendants are, he does not know. Nor has he tried looking for them as he no longer leaves his home.
Another reason he wears the eye covering is because he knows that the less amount of interaction he has with people, the less he can miss them. He can‘t despair over a face he‘s never seen, now can he?
Roleplay Sample:
Yao was, needless to say, disorganized, disgruntled, and displeased. All day, all day! He had spent all day, cleaning up the house, slaving over a hot stove preparing the food, setting the dining room, and even making himself look extra neat with more graceful and flowing, traditional clothes! It was a moon viewing party, he had invited his whole Asian family too. But not even a single one of those ungrateful children showed up! How could they let such food go to waste?! How could they turn down such a gracious offer?!
Even Taiwan and Hong Kong skipped out at the last moment, as if they had something better do to! Kids these days, honestly! Not that he’d ever let on that it actually made him sad. He’d just scold them like no tomorrow when he got his hands on them. He grumbled, sitting at the table. Not even that silly Russian had decided to intrude! He grumbled once again before shoving food, unceremoniously into his mouth. Not the way he would usually do it, but it wasn’t like there was anyone to see him, “Fine, I enjoy by self, aru.”
About a half an hour later, a meal meant for a large sized family ten or more was gone. He stared down at the dishes, debating doing the right thing and cleaning them now, or leaving them and going to bed. He was rather sleepy after a full stomach… But there was no way he could just leave the dishes there. With a sight, he got to his feet and started collecting the dishes, heading to the kitchen through a darkened house. He would at least soak them in warm, soapy water before going to sleep. That way none of the left over bits of crumbs and such would stick to the plates.
