Personality: Tall but quiet, Matthew would (in private) consider himself a gentleman. Sometimes considered slightly cliché by his friends, he strongly believes in honor, kindness, fairness, and truth. He has an extreme disliking for conflict, often allowing others to step over him as long as an argument is avoided. Some people view him as timid, though when prompted, Matthew can be very resilient and stubborn. If he goes into this state, chances are he won't stop for quite a while. It's lucky that most people never see him that way.
Generally, Matthew is quietly cheerful, silently happy. However, inside, Matthew can be plagued by loneliness. Occasionally, when Matthew is feeling extremely down, he is filled with a hate of who he is. Usually this period of depression doesn't last very long, though if it does, Matthew tends to shut himself in his house and refuse to come out.
Matthew rarely gets angry, but when he does, it explodes out of him, washing away the other person like a flood. He will argue his point until his opponent is unable to take it anymore. Matthew notices a great deal more than he is credited for and can name an extensive amount of information about a person that they are trying to keep secret. Luckily for them, he rarely exposes this information. Usually it is when he is angry and not considering other's feelings that he rambles on about it.
Being more on the quiet side, Matthew only has a few close friends and tends to drift in the background. While generally he is content doing this, at times he does lament over why he is unable to feel comfortable in a crowd. Unused to attention, Matthew tends to get embarrassed at the smallest of things and doesn't speak too much. One of his goals in life is to improve his social skills. He'd like to be more outgoing (though not quite as outgoing as his brother). To make up for his lack of close friends, Matthew is sometimes seen talking to himself and while he'd never say it aloud, he does argue with the little voice in his head quite frequently.
Thanks to his generally quiet demeanor, Matthew is often underestimated in almost all areas. People tend to think that he is shy or scared. In truth, Matthew just doesn't know how to communicate what he means and what's going on. He's not as comfortable with change and tends to cling onto the past.
Matthew can be somewhat overprotective of his family, mainly his brother, who, before running away to Medius, was the only one that was constantly beside him. After Alfred left, Matthew became very withdrawn for a period of time and even less social than before. A great deal of his friends were "disgusted by his weakness" and left him to be. This is one of the reasons why Matthew feels awkward in a crowd and lets himself fade into the background.
History: (Details still being worked out with America and England)
Matthew was born to a middle-class couple alongside his brother, Alfred. Matthew took on his mother's maiden name, Williams. As a young child, Matthew and his brother were often left at home to themselves. While his parents weren't necessarily bad parents, they were never around much. Matthew developed his instinct to fade into the background from this period of time.
Eventually, Matthew's parents hired a babysitter...Arthur Kirkland. He was a little older than them and Matthew grew to appreciate him more than he did his parents. The twins began spending so much time with Arthur that Matthew began to treat him more like a father and respect him more than his parents.
There came a time when his parents finally decided that they could not keep doing this to their children and Matthew and Alfred were officially given into Arthur's care. This was probably the happiest time of Matthew's life, where he felt he had a true family. Matthew brightened up somewhat and became a little more social.
Then, Arthur and Alfred got into a fight. Matthew attempted to stop them but the two argued and argued until finally, out of rage, Alfred stormed out of the house. Matthew tried to follow him but in the end, could not find Alfred. It later turned out that Alfred headed towards Medius and could not find his way back to Penuria due to not even knowing the address of their house.
Times became quiet in Arthur's house and Matthew became more withdrawn than before. He missed his brother dearly and more than once, he'd gotten on a horse determined to find his brother only to slide back off. It seemed that with Alfred's disappearance, Matthew's courage had also disappeared.
One day, out of nowhere, the king appeared, knocking on their front door. Matthew had heard horror stories about the king and his ruthlessness, but when he met the king, he saw nothing of that. Just a kind gentleman. To his shock and surprise, the king ended up "adopting him"...perse. Regular visits and frequent invites to the palace ensued and while Matthew never grew extraordinarily close to the king, he did feel like he had yet another surrogate father.
Matthew was given the opportunity to be a member of the king's court, a great honor indeed, but he turned it down. Matthew didn't want anything to do with war...he was fine the way he was. So instead, Matthew turned towards cooking. After living under Arthur's roof for so long, it had been a shock when he came to the palace and the food tasted so...good. Matthew ended up starting one of the most popular restaurants in the country, the most prominent feature being the all-day breakfast. He soon moved out of Arthur's house. The man had grown colder and distant in the years since Alfred had left, and Matthew had always known who had been his favorite. Still, he persisted in doing his job. People didn't need to know about things like that, he'd learned enough to know that everyone had a similar story. But Matthew was alright, happy enough, trying to remain optimistic. That's what Alfred would've done. And even now, after all this time, if there was one person Matthew looked up to, it was his brother.

Roleplay Sample: Matthew ran his fingers through his hair, desperately trying to stop that curl in his hair from popping up like it always did. It had been that way from childbirth and no matter what Matthew did to it, no matter what amount of hair gel he put on it, it always popped back into the same place.
Sighing, Matthew moved onto his tie. Adjusting it (and loosening it slightly, just enough so he could breathe), Matthew nodded to himself in the mirror.
This is the day, he thought. This is the day.
Matthew was more nervous than he cared to admit. To most people, it wouldn't be all that interesting. Just another meeting amongst at least a hundred others. Matthew (thank goodness) wasn't even speaking. There should be no reason to be worried.
You don't have to do this, the little voice in his head whispered.
Yes I do.
A sharp rapping on the door startled Matthew and brought him back to reality. “Mr. Williams!” the housekeeper, Annette, Matthew believed her name was, called. “Your car is ready!”
“Thank you,” Matthew said back. He heard her walk down the hallway until her footsteps had completely disappeared before he opened the door.
If you're really intent on this, you should've opened the door and thanked her.
...That was true. Perhaps he should've. But it didn't matter now. What was done was done.
Matthew took a deep breath and walked out of the room. He walked as confidently as he could, unsure if he looked awkward, or maybe a little off. Maybe he should just back out of this, it wasn't like his attendance was absolutely crucial.
Within seconds, Matthew was out of the inn. A small yellow taxi was parked in front of it, the driver smoking a cigarette. Matthew coughed slightly and waved his hand in front of his face, trying to get the smoke away from his face and new suit.
“Where to?” the driver asked, oblivious to Matthew's discomfort.
“21st Street, number 288,” Matthew said, his words softer than he wanted.
I told you you couldn't do it.
The driver nodded and with a squeal, the car bumpily made its way down Andrew Avenue. Matthew squirmed in discomfort—the driver was extremely callous, honking on the horn constantly and cutting through lanes like his life depended on it. Out of the corner of his eye, Matthew spotted the top of a beer bottle. Of course.
When they finally arrived on 21st Street, Matthew considered telling the man off. They could've been killed.
He cleared his throat.
“Thank you for the ride.” Matthew handed the man some cash, nodded, and then headed in.
Such an idiot.
Ignoring the little voice in his head that was taunting him, Matthew boarded the elevator and headed for the fifth floor. As the doors slid open, Matthew was faced by the most intimidating thing imaginable. Crowds and crowds of people flocked around in the room, chitchat everywhere. Women in beautiful dresses talked to men in smart looking business suits. Waiters hurried around the area, cleaning up small spills and carrying drinks around for the guests.
Matthew gulped. All the energy and bravery that had driven him to this step dissipated.
The elevator doors closed.
Maybe some other day.
